Ode to spanish omelette

Extra virgin olive oil, monalisa potatoe and fresh eggs. Just three ingredients to make one of the most famous dishes in Spain. You can add whatever you want: onion, zucchini, spice, chorizo, even turn it in a kind of a cake. Although it’s easy to cook, there are different ways to prepare: well done, medium or almost a potatoe soup; depends on your taste. In my opinion I like juicy and with onion.

Sylkar. Tortilla not very cooked, the egg almost liquid and have onion. It’s very popular among bars serving this tapa. They are opened from 8:00 to 18:00 and 20:00 to 24:00, prices vary 2,60€ a piece of tortilla (1/5) and 7,50€ half (C/ Espronceda 17, metro station Ríos Rosas)

La Ardosa. Well known bar, always crowded. Their recipe is an institution if you want to know how to make a good spanish omelette, although we recommend visiting and try this delicious tapa (2,5 € – 11 €). They are opened from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, find them in two locations: original one C/ Colón 13 (metro station Tribunal) and the other one located in c/ Santa Engracia 70 (metro station Iglesia)

Casa Dani. Located in one of the most posh Madrid neighbourhoods, this old fashioned bar make more than 200 omelettes per day… with onion, music for me ears! This place is opened from 7:00 to 19:30 and located in C/ Ayala 28 (metro station Velazquez)

Juana la loca. Huge variety of tapas in this fancy place but a bit expensive (from 4 € to 10 € every pintxo) but their “tortilla” recipe has a singularity: caramelized onion; maybe this flavour is not suitable for certain palates. It is located in Plaza puerta de moros, 4 (metro station Tirso de Molina) Timetable: 13:00–17:30, 20:00–24:00.

Ocafú. This Galician restaurant serves a spanish omelette briefly cooked but looks delicious (around 8 €). In their website says that have the best “tortilla” in Spain, so check it out in C/ de la Infanta Mercedes, 98 (metro station Valdeacederas) is opened from 12:00 to midnight.

Viva Chapata. A veggie option in Lavapies, their spanish omelette has nothing to envy from regular ones (with eggs) Around 5 € a portion. Opened from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm (metro station Lavapies)



Solanum tuberosum or well known as potato. This delicious vegetable has an important role in gastronomy, at least in Spain. If you are going to eat something, you know, the typical “salir a tapear” (going out for tapas) and have a shy taste I have the perfect recommendation … no, is not spanish omelette, is “patatas bravas” (brave potatoes): fried and with hot sauce (brave sauce). Usually, in all bars, boil potatoes and then fried them slightly: it’s easier and faster; anyway the important thing here is the sauce. Unlike people think, this “dressing” hasn’t any tomatoes!!! Not in Madrid. The basic recipe is made with garlic, olive oil, flour, sherry, spicy paprika and salt; from this point has variations and different bars, restaurants and taverns have their own secret recipe.

Many of these bars don’t speak english but well worth visit them:

Docamar. Near of Pueblo Nuevo metro station with terrace and good value for money. You can take away their sauce. They have good opinions about everything and very recommended. Take a look their website.

A’conchiña.In the same area (Alcalá) you can visit as well and compare (15 minutes on foot from Docamar) Traditional gallego bar with delicious tapas.

Anci. Following Alcalá street you can find this neighbourhood bar, little and sometimes crowded. Ask for a “pool”, yes a pool, they name beer jars “piscinas”.

Las bravas. There are few in Madrid but the original one is in the “pasaje del gato” (Álvarez Gato street). Famous for their sauce, which is registered trademark.

Bodega La Ardosa. Founded in 1892 here you can taste “unas bravas” and the typical spanish omelette. There are two: one in Santa Engracia 70 and the other in Colón, 13.

I wasn’t a big sushi fan but now…

I have a bunch of friends that they are HUGE sushi fans. In the beginning, I thought sushi was a special meal for people suffering from diarrhoea, you know, it looks like astringent diet but they convinced me and the more I ate it, the more a I liked it. So now I’m a sushi fan, or rather a noodles/gyoza fan.

In Madrid you have every kind of food you want: turkish, indian, japanese, mexican, italian, argentine, … But I tasted a few japonese and chinese restaurants that I highly recommended:

Sumo. Buffet menu 18€, 3 orders with 5 dishes each one. Be careful if you order for sushi in the first round maybe you can finish the second and has a 2€ extra for unfinished dishes. Advice: 1st order salads or soup. There are a few Sumo restaurants but I usually go to dinner at Fuencarral Sumo (sun-thu 13:00-16:30/20:00-24:00 and fri-sat 13:00-16:30/20:00-24:30)

Ninja ramen. Excellent presentation and amazing ramen. Near metro tribunal (line 10). Reserve a table!! (12:00–16:30, 19:30–24:00)

Zhou Yulong. Or well known as the Plaza España chinese restaurant. Cheap, fast and recommended by chinese people. Located in an underground parking garage. Here some opinions. (10:00–01:00 every day)
